#12 Mar 25 - Version T21

Hello everyone,

I know this update is a bit late compared to my usual upload time, you’ll have to excuse me as I’ve run into some unexpected matters, in regard to other things then game dev.

For those who are not aware, I’m Canadian and my family and I are Maple Syrup artisans if you will, and the season just started and we ran into some issues which I had to help solve before coming back to game dev, but now everything should be under control, though it will reduce my dev time a bit for the next couple weeks.

Now that that’s out of the way, this week was actually quite a productive one and some good progress was made, the sad part is you won’t be able to test it all out this week. As I’ve been putting some solid time on the multiplayer feature, (which right now only works locally as I haven’t rented a server yet) But I’ll try to show a video of it in next week devlogs.

But don’t worry I also spent time on other changes that you’ll be able to try out, but you’ll have to be mindful as I’ve been making some drastic changed on some things, mainly how items behave and such so you may find bugs/unfinished features.

One of which is the addition of cassette tapes. The idea is that as you travel trough space you’ll find old tapes left behind by other space voyagers, old space missions, crash sites,etc... and trough listening to those you’ll unlock different things like new recipes for instance. So you can now unlock some recipes trough those (3 as of right now) and with this change I also made it so you don’t start with all recipes unlocked anymore, but do not worry as I added a temporary button to unlock all recipes so you can still try things out.

Together with this I’m also in the middle of revamping the inventory UI.

Changes :

  • Multiplayer
    • Way better handling of player connecting and disconnecting from lobbies
    • Players can now be in different rooms, and you don’t see player who are in a differrent room
    • Station is shared so when joining a lobby you get to be in their station
    • Removing,Adding and updating furniture now syncs through the network so you can redecorate while your friends are there.
  • New Furnitures
    • Cassette (Furniture Version)
    • Nightstand (3 Versions)
    • Desk Lamp (4 Versions)
  • Addition of Cassette Tapes
    • You’ll be able to find those on celestial bodies you visit for now, one cassette appear per celestial
    • Added Cassette #1-#2-#3
    • Can be used to unlock a recipe
  • Inventory UI Revamp
    • In the inventory you’ll now see buttons to the right of each item to show what you can do with them, placing, using and inspecting (inspecting doesn’t work for now)
    • Can now use item trough inventory
  • Player now starts with a limited list of items they can craft
    • Added a temporary button to unlock all recipes to test things out
  • Shadows are now back on celestial bodies - but shadow resolution as been reduced from 4096 to 2048
  • Space rocks (Hydrogen,Iron,Rock,Carbon) had their sprites removed and have been replaced for 3d cubes, they will eventually get a 3d model.

I’ll leave it at that for tonight as it’s already late, but I’m really happy with the change I made this week, especially the multiplayer one, has it lifted a weight from my shoulder a bit has it’s been going quite well so far, making me think that it is actually feasible to turn this into a full on multiplayer game which is quite exciting.

I’ll see you again next week with a more detail and polished post.
